1793
Washington Lays Cornerstone

President George Washington traveled to the new federal city that would bear his name to participate in a historic Masonic ceremony. The 61-year-old president arrived at Jenkins Hill, later known as Capitol Hill, where the United States Capitol building would rise. Thousands of spectators gathered to witness this foundational moment in American history. The ceremony represented the young nation's commitment to creating a permanent seat of government.

Washington, dressed in his Masonic apron and carrying a silver trowel, officially laid the cornerstone of the Capitol's southeast corner. The Masonic ceremony included traditional rituals involving corn, wine, and oil poured over the stone. Alexandria Lodge No. 22 of Virginia conducted the proceedings, with Washington serving as the Worshipful Master. The cornerstone contained a silver plate marking the thirteenth year of American independence and the first year of Washington's second presidential term.

Masonic layout of the Capital

The ceremony took place exactly eleven years after the Constitution was signed, symbolically connecting America's founding document to its future home. Pierre Charles L'Enfant had designed the federal city's layout, placing the Capitol at its center as the focal point of American democracy. The building would house both the Senate and House of Representatives, fulfilling the Constitution's vision of a separate legislative branch.

The cornerstone's exact location remains lost to history, as later renovations and expansions obscured the original foundation. Despite extensive searches, archaeologists have never definitively identified Washington's stone among the Capitol's massive foundation. However, the ceremony established September 18th as a cornerstone date in American democracy, marking the moment when the nation's legislative home began rising from the Maryland hills.

1973
Jimmy Carter UFO Report

Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter sat down and filled out an official UFO report sent to him by the International UFO Bureau in Oklahoma City. The 48-year-old governor carefully documented a strange sighting that had occurred four years earlier in October 1969. Carter had been reluctant to discuss the incident publicly, but growing interest in UFO phenomena prompted him to file the formal report.

Jimmy Carter

The report described an incident from October 1969 when Carter was waiting to give a speech at a Lions Club meeting in Leary, Georgia. About 10 to 25 witnesses observed a bright object in the western sky that changed colors from blue to red to white. The object appeared as bright as the moon and hovered near a line of pine trees for approximately 10 to 12 minutes before disappearing.

Carters UFO Report

Carter's handwritten report provided detailed observations of the unusual phenomenon. He described the object as self-illuminated and lacking solid form, ruling out conventional aircraft or weather balloons. As a former naval officer with engineering training, Carter's technical background added credibility to his account. He mailed the completed report on September 20, 1973, making it official government documentation.

Carter’s note he sent on Voyager

The filing of this report later became significant during Carter's 1976 presidential campaign when reporters discovered his UFO experience. He promised voters complete government transparency about UFO information if elected president. However, after winning the presidency, Carter backed away from this pledge, citing national security concerns. His willingness to document the sighting set a precedent for government officials discussing unexplained aerial phenomena.

Plague of Justinian🦠
The Plague of Justinian (541-549 AD) killed an estimated 25-50 million people, more than the Black Death. This earlier pandemic was so catastrophic it may have prevented the Byzantine Empire from reconquering the Western Roman Empire, permanently altering the course of European history.

Byzantine Fire🔥
Byzantine Greek fire was a secret incendiary weapon that could burn on water and couldn't be extinguished. This terrifying naval weapon remained a closely guarded state secret for centuries - even today, historians debate its exact composition, though it likely contained petroleum, quicklime, and sulfur.

Viking Parlament⚓️
Vikings established the world's first parliament, the Althing, in Iceland in 930 AD. This outdoor assembly met annually where all free men could speak, debate laws, and settle disputes - creating representative government while most of Europe still lived under absolute monarchy.

Original Clocks
Chinese inventors created the first mechanical clocks, using water and weights for timekeeping. These elaborate water clocks from the 8th century featured escapement mechanisms, astronomical displays, and bells that chimed the hours - complex mechanical marvels that predated European clockmaking by centuries.
