Let’s look back on the highlights and make sure you’re all caught up!🌌⚖️

But first, Today In History…

Crime: On December 13, 2003, U.S. forces successfully captured Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. This marked a pivotal moment in the conflict, as Hussein, a central figure in Iraq's political landscape was sought after for nine months. U.S. forces made several unsuccessful attempts and raided multiple locations while he was hiding in a tiny underground bunker near a rural farmhouse all this time. He was known for his decades-long authoritarian rule and involvement in various regional conflicts and crimes against humanity.

War: On December 13, 1862, General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army decisively defended the ongoing attacks by General Ambrose Burnside's Union army at Fredericksburg, Virginia. This was a major defeat for the Union and hurt Northern spirits during the winter of 1862 to 1863. Burnside took over the Union army in November 1862 after George McClellan did not chase Lee into Virginia following the Battle of Antietam in Maryland on September 17. Burnside quickly made a plan to attack the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. He wanted the Union army to quickly march from northern Virginia to Fredericksburg on the Rappahannock River, cross the river there, and then continue moving south but all his plans were doomed after the defeat.

Religion: On December 13, 1545, the Council of Trent, an important meeting of the Roman Catholic Church, started under the leadership of Pope Paul III in Trent, Italy. This council played a key role in revitalizing the church in Europe after the Protestant Reformation. Initially, there were calls for reform due to criticism of church leaders, but the popes were slow to respond to the Protestants' demands. Pope Clement VII's successor, Paul III, believed that a council was necessary for reform and planned one for May 23, 1537, in Mantua. However, due to various hurdles, the council finally began in Trent on December 13, 1545. Paul III is considered the first pope of the Counter-Reformation, and the Council of Trent was crucial in the Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation.

Mafia: On December 13, 2013, authorities apprehended a sister, a nephew, and two cousins of the elusive Cosa Nostra "Super Boss" Matteo Messina Denaro in the Trapani area of Western Sicily, along with several other suspects. They were charged with Mafia association and extortion. Prosecutors hailed these arrests as a crucial breakthrough in the pursuit of the notorious figure, who had evaded capture for two decades. Ultimately, in January 2023, Italy's most wanted man, Matteo Messina Denaro was finally arrested by police while receiving treatment at a private health clinic in Palermo. He had been on a run since 1993.
