Crime: On December 2, 2015, an American couple of Pakistani descent launched a terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. The attackers Syed Rizwan Farook the husband and Tashfeen Malik the wife targeted a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health event, killing 14 and injuring 22. The couple fled the scene but were killed in a shootout with police four hours later. Initial investigations by the FBI revealed the couple’s inclination towards Islamic militant groups. Weapons and explosive materials were also found at their residence.
War: On December 2, 1941, a series of small battles between Finland and the Soviet Union ended on the Hanko Peninsula. Although the Hanko area was leased as a naval base to the USSR according to the 1940 Moscow peace treaty, the Finnish were eager to get it back. As a result, small battles started between the two sides. Both wanted to avoid a big, costly battle, so they fought using trench warfare, artillery, sniping, patrols, and small sea operations. A Swedish volunteer battalion also came to help the Finnish forces against the Soviets. Eventually, the Soviets had to leave the Hanko in the form of convoys. The last Soviet troops left the area in December 1941. It wasn’t the end of the tensions between the two countries as hostilities between Finland and the USSR persisted until September 1944 with the signing of the Moscow Armistice in which Finland restored its borders per the 1940 Moscow Peace Treaty
Religion: On December 2, 1697, St Paul’s Cathedral in London was officially opened. It is one of the most famous churches in the world. Sir Christopher Wren, Britain’s greatest architect, designed St Paul’s Cathedral after the Great Fire of 1666, which destroyed much of London. He wanted the cathedral to be the centerpiece of the city as it was rebuilt after the fire and the Plague. Interestingly, Wren did not formally learn to design buildings, he was a self-taught architect. However, he had the experience of designing 52 churches in London before he started working on the St Paul’s Cathedral.
Mafia: On December 2, 1993, a day after Pablo Escobar's birthday, Colombian forces discovered and raided his hideout in Medellín. As a result, Escobar was fatally shot while trying to escape. Escobar was referred to as "the king of cocaine" and was among the richest criminals ever. He founded and led the Medellín cartel and also took an active part in Colombian politics. After his death, the Medellín Cartel fragmented, and the Cali Cartel dominated the cocaine market until the mid-1990s. Despite his criminal activities, Escobar's Robin Hood image left a lasting impact in Medellín, where over 25,000 people, including many of the city's poor whom he had helped, mourned his death at his funeral.
