Hey Gang! 🌲🔥 It’s finally Monday, so that means it’s time for Camp! You may have noticed there wasn’t much Camp last week, but this week we’re stepping back into the tent to dive into the world of undercover FBI operations with Bob Hamer and explore Ancient Greece with Joseph Manning. From contract killings to ancient myths, this week is packed with everything to keep you entertained! Let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week! 🚔🏛️
But first… Today In History

Crime: On December 30, 1916, Grigory Rasputin, a self-proclaimed holy man, was killed by Russian nobles who were vary of his increasing influence over the royal family. Rasputin gained favor with Czar Nicholas II and Czarina Alexandra in 1908 by helping their hemophiliac son, Alexei. Despite criticism for his behavior, he held significant sway over the family, angering many. His death was reported by The Stock Exchange Gazette on the evening of 30 December, even before his body was found under river ice on January 1. Rasputin was buried on January 2 at a small church in Tsarskoye Selo, with only the Russian royal family and their close associates attending the funeral.

Crime: On December 30, 1994, John Salvi III attacked two abortion clinics in Brookline, Massachusetts, killing two receptionists and injuring five others. He got captured after a similar incident in Virginia, the next day. Salvi, described by his colleagues as "odd," had become a fervent anti-abortion activist. Despite his erratic behavior, his parents did not seek treatment for him. In 1996, he was convicted of murder and later he committed suicide in prison. The aftermath included a lawsuit by victim Richard Seron against the clinic's landlord for inadequate security, which he lost. Seron also opposed a buffer zone law for clinics and sued Planned Parenthood for a reward related to Salvi's capture.

Crime: On the evening of December 30, 1999, George Harrison, the lead guitarist of The Beatles, narrowly escaped becoming the second member of the iconic group to be murdered. This incident occurred at his Friar Park mansion, where George and his wife, Olivia, had just retired for the night. Olivia heard a noise and urged George to investigate the source of the disturbance while she promptly contacted the police for assistance. On seeing a man wielding a stone sword in one hand, and a menacing kitchen knife in the other, George bravely tried to disarm the intruder by seizing the knife. The attacker, however, gained the upper hand and positioned himself atop George. The situation became increasingly perilous as the assailant began to stab George repeatedly, causing severe injuries. At this critical juncture, Olivia intervened by striking the attacker with a lamp to save George.

Crime: On December 30, 2009, a suicide bombing at a CIA facility in Forward Operating Base Chapman, Afghanistan, killed seven CIA officers and contractors, a Jordanian intelligence officer, and an Afghan national. The attacker, al-Balawi, detonated an explosive vest, injuring six other CIA officers. This was the deadliest attack on the CIA in over 25 years. Al-Balawi, a Jordanian physician, had been recruited by the CIA and Jordanian intelligence to infiltrate al-Qaeda but used this trust to access the base. Al-Qaeda and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack.
