Let’s take a look at what’s coming your way! 🌌👽
But first, Today In History…

War: On December 16, 1938, Adolf Hitler introduced the Mother’s Cross to encourage women of "pure" German descent to have more children and increase the population of Nazi Germany. The Nazis promoted this idea early on. When girls in the League of German Girls, part of the Hitler Youth, turned 18, they could join a group called Faith and Beauty, which taught them how to be ideal mothers. A key part of this ideal was having many children. Each year, gold medals were given to women with eight or more children, silver medals to those with six or seven, and bronze medals to those with five. These medals were given out from 1938 to 1944.

Crime: On December 16, 1989, Federal Judge Robert Vance was killed by a bomb when he opened a package at his home. Judge Vance was at his kitchen table in Mountain Brook, Alabama, when he opened the package. The FBI quickly started an investigation called VANPAC to find the person responsible. In June 1991, Walter Leroy Moody was found guilty of the bombings and sentenced to multiple life terms plus 400 years in prison for sending out four mail bombs in December of 1989, killing Judge Robert S Vance, a member of the Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals, in Alabama and Robert E Robinson, a black civil rights attorney from Savannah, Georgia. In 1997, an Alabama judge sentenced him to death for Vance's murder, and he was executed in 2018.

Religion: On December 16, 1968, Francisco Franco's regime revoked the citizenship rights offered to the Sephardic Jews in Spain. These rights were given by Primo de Rivera's government, back in 1924. Franco's regime revoked this decree after the Second Vatican Council. Jews had been openly practicing in Spain for a century, with synagogues legally recognized. In 2015, Spain allowed Jewish descendants to apply for dual citizenship to amend past injustices, offering Sephardic Jews a chance to "become Spaniards without leaving home." However, this law expired in 2019. While Spain no longer accepts new applications, descendants of exiled Sephardic Jews can still seek Portuguese citizenship.

Mafia: On December 16, 1985, Paul Castellano, the leader of a major mafia family in the US, and his bodyguard were shot and killed as they got out of a limousine in Manhattan. An FBI expert on organized crime said this could start a "crime war." Castellano, the head of the Gambino crime family, and Thomas Bilotti, a family captain, were shot multiple times by three gunmen. The attackers pulled automatic weapons from under their coats and fired, then disappeared into the busy crowd. Castellano, 73, was on trial for running a Car-theft ring that allegedly killed five people who threatened to reveal its activities.
