…but first some Today in History 👇

Crime: On November 29, 2011, Conrad Murray, the doctor found guilty of causing Michael Jackson's death by accident in 2009, was sentenced to four years in jail in Los Angeles. Michael Jackson was born in 1958 in Gary, Indiana, and became famous as a child performing with his brothers in the Jackson 5. His 1982 solo album "Thriller" made him a global superstar. However, by the 1990s, he was known for strange behavior and many changes to his appearance through plastic surgery. He died at 50 in his California home from a heart attack after being given propofol, a strong sleep medicine, by Doctor Murray.

War: On November 29, 1967, Robert McNamara announced his resignation as Secretary of Defense in President Lyndon B. Johnson’s government. He was assigned to preside World Bank shortly after his resignation. McNamara served as Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Initially supporting U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, he later questioned the strategy and backed a negotiated resolution. In the summer of 1967, he helped develop the San Antonio formula, a peace initiative proposing a halt to U.S. bombing for North Vietnam's participation in talks, which North Vietnam rejected in October. These developments led to his departure from Johnson’s cabinet.

Religion: On November 29, 1847, a dedicated missionary physician Marcus Whitman, along with his wife Narcissa and twelve others, fell victim to a brutal attack by members of the Cayuse tribe in the Walla Walla Valley which is known to everyone as Washington State now. Marcus Whitman unknowingly brought the deadly measles virus back after a successful journey across the country to keep his social mission stations active. The introduction of measles to the native population had devastating consequences. The Cayuse tribe, lacking immunity to the disease, suffered severe outbreaks. The Cayuse, desperate and grieving, held Whitman and the missionaries responsible for the spread of the disease, believing that they had intentionally brought it upon them. This misunderstanding and the resulting anger culminated in the tragic attack on the Whitman Mission, an event that would later be known as the Whitman Massacre.

War: On November 29, 1986, the Suriname government sent 70 soldiers to the village of Moiwana because they thought it was a base for Brunswijk. The soldiers killed many villagers and burned down their homes. The villagers, known as Maroons, escaped to French Guiana to avoid the violence. In French Guiana, they lived in camps but weren't officially recognized as refugees, so they couldn't work or get benefits. They stayed there until the early 1990s when France and Suriname agreed to help them return home. On July 15, 2015, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held the Suriname government responsible for the massacre and ordered them to compensate the survivors and victims' families and to prosecute those responsible.
