War: On December 23, 2005, Chad officially declared a state of war against its neighboring country, Sudan. This declaration came in the wake of a violent and devastating attack on the town of Adré, which occurred on December 18, 2005. The assault resulted in the tragic loss of approximately 100 lives, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations. This event was a catalyst for the onset of the Chadian Civil War, a brutal and protracted conflict that began in December 2005 and persisted for several years, finally coming to an end in 2010. The roots of this conflict can be traced back to Chad's complex and tumultuous history since gaining independence from France in 1960. The nation has been plagued by a series of civil wars, primarily driven by deep-seated divisions between the Arab-Muslim population in the northern regions and the Sub-Saharan-Christian communities in the southern parts of the country.

Crime: On December 23, 2021, law enforcement officials in Florida discovered cocaine and methamphetamine concealed around a man's genital area during a routine traffic stop. The individual in question, identified as 34-year-old Patrick Florence, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at approximately 4 a.m. During the search of the vehicle, authorities located a firearm beneath the passenger seat and subsequently found the narcotics on the passenger's person. Despite the discovery, Mr. Florence denied ownership of the drugs and did not provide information regarding their ownership, as noted in the arrest report. According to jail records, Mr. Florence has an extensive history of similar offenses, having been apprehended by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on more than a dozen occasions, predominantly for charges related to cocaine or crack cocaine.

Religion: On December 23, 1922, following his ascension to the papacy, Pius XI promulgated the Encyclical "Ubi Arcano Dei Consilio," in which he delineated essential measures for achieving global peace. Pius XI observed that, despite the conclusion of the Great War, neither individuals, societal classes, nor nations had attained genuine peace. He noted that nations remained adversarial, and public life was obscured by "the dense fog of mutual hatreds." The conflict between affluent and impoverished classes persisted, as each sought dominance over the other and control of the other's assets. Furthermore, familial discord was prevalent, as the war had disrupted family structures, separating fathers and sons from the "family fireside" and eroding moral values. The pope remarked that people of his era were defying legitimate authority and neglecting their responsibilities. He lamented that, despite the era's celebrated progress, society was regressing "slowly but surely into a state of barbarism."

Mafia: On December 23, 1921, Carlo Gambino entered the United States as an illegal immigrant on the SS Vincenzo Florio. He was born in Sicily in 1902. Young Carlo quickly found his niche in the world of organized crime. He initially joined forces with Joe Masseria's Mafia group and later switched sides to team up with Salvatore Maranzano during the Castellammarese War. After Maranzano was killed, Gambino became part of the Mangano crime family, which eventually took on his name. His climb to the top was marked by clever alliances and involvement in significant events, like the 1957 murder of Albert Anastasia. As the leader of the Gambino family, he appointed influential figures and played a key role in the Mafia's Commission, especially after Vito Genovese was jailed in 1959. Despite his criminal endeavors, Gambino managed to dodge long prison terms, often using health issues as a defense in court.
