Crime: On November 13, 1974, a tragic incident occurred in Amityville, Long Island, New York, when a young man named Ronald DeFeo Jr. used a rifle to murder his entire family, including his parents, two brothers, and two sisters, within their residence. This appalling event has since inspired numerous horror narratives. Following the incident, Ronald proceeded to a local bar, where he informed patrons that his parents had been shot. Several individuals from the bar accompanied him to his residence at 112 Ocean Avenue, whereupon the authorities were notified of the murders. Initially, the 23-year-old Ronald attributed the crime to mob involvement; however, he confessed to the murders the following day.
Mafia: On November 13, 2023, Juan Castro from San Diego received a 10-year prison sentence followed by 10 years of supervised release in federal court. According to a government memo, Castro was a prominent figure in the San Ysidro street gang, also known as "Sidro," and had ties to the Mexican Mafia. He managed the gang's daily activities, which included collecting payments from others in exchange for allowing them to commit crimes in the San Ysidro area. These payments, often referred to as taxes, were then passed on to senior members of the Mexican Mafia. During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns described Castro as a "hand puppet for the Mexican Mafia." His arrest was the result of a thorough investigation by the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force and Gang Group.
Religion: On November 13, 1938, twenty-one years after her death, the Roman Catholic Church beatified Frances Xavier Cabrini. Her annual feast day is also celebrated on November 13 every year. Mother Cabrini is the first woman to have a paid state holiday named for her in the United States. Born in 1850 in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, Italy, Cabrini was a pioneering religious figure who dedicated her life to serving the poor and the immigrant communities in the United States. She founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an organization focused on education, healthcare, and social services. Her legacy continues to inspire many in the fields of social justice and humanitarian work.
War: On November 13, 1941, the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal was tragically torpedoed by the German submarine U-81. The attack occurred while the Ark Royal was returning to Gibraltar after successfully delivering aircraft to Malta, a mission that was part of the ongoing efforts to support Allied forces in the Mediterranean. Despite the crew's valiant efforts to save the ship, the damage was too severe, and the HMS Ark Royal ultimately sank the following day. The loss of the Ark Royal was a blow to the Royal Navy, as the carrier had played a crucial role in several key operations, including the hunt for the German battleship Bismarck.
