Crime: On September 27, 1864, the Centralia Massacre took place during the American Civil War when Confederate guerrilla leader William "Bloody Bill" Anderson, alongside Jesse James and other guerrillas, looted the town of Centralia, Missouri, and attacked a train on the North Missouri Railroad. The guerrillas brutally executed 24 unarmed Union soldiers they had captured aboard the train. Later that same day, Anderson's forces ambushed and decimated the 39th Missouri Infantry Regiment, a newly formed Union regiment, killing 123 of its 147 soldiers in a savage battle. The massacre was part of the violent guerrilla warfare in Missouri and stands as one of the bloodiest episodes of the conflict.
