Crime: On October 23, 2019, a tragic situation unfolded in Grays, Essex, UK when 39 Vietnamese including 31 men and 8 women were found dead in the trailer of an articulated refrigerator lorry. The trailer had been shipped from the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, to Purfleet, Essex, UK. The lorry cab and its driver seemed to have originated from Northern Ireland. Investigations involving the national authorities of the UK, Belgium, Ireland and Vietnam were led by Essex Police.
Eleven people were convicted of crimes related to the incident in the UK and a further nineteen were jailed in Belgium.
War: On October 23, 2002, about 50 Chechen rebels led by Movsar Barayev took over the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow during the performance of a musical, Nord-Ost. Approximately 850 individuals were taken hostage by the insurgents, who subsequently issued a demand for the withdrawal of Russian military forces from the region of Chechnya. The siege persisted for approximately three days and concluded in a poor rescue attempt by Russian security forces. They released a chemical gas within the theater. Unfortunately, the operation resulted in the deaths of around 170 hostages and all the attackers also died inside the theater.
Religion: On October 23, 1976, Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter had to respond to a public outcry over comments he made in an interview with Playboy magazine. With reference to what Christ said, ‘I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery,'” Carter said in the interview. “I’ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. It was not an easy election for Jimmy Carter with a weak political base after stepping down as governor of Georgia, so he was clearly not in a position to afford misunderstanding before the election. He came forward to gain the trust of people and stood his ground to become the 39th present of United State by defeating Gerald Ford.
Mafia: On October 23, 2008, a remote-detonated bomb went off in front of the “Nacional” newspaper office in Zagreb, Croatia, killing Ivo Pukanić, the owner of the paper. The marketing manager of the paper and two other people also lost their lives in that incident.
Following a thorough police investigation, it was alleged that Croatian and Serbian crime groups were behind the bombing. Eight individuals with suspected ties to these mafia groups faced charges. Ultimately, six of them were found guilty of the murders and received prison sentences ranging from 15 to 40 years.
