War: On December 9, 2017, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi joyfully announced the decisive victory over the Islamic State. This came after Iraqi forces successfully pushed the last of the militants out of the country, marking the end of a three-year struggle during which the group had seized about a third of Iraq's land. Just two days earlier, the Russian military had declared the defeat of the militants in Syria, where they were supporting the Syrian government forces. To celebrate, several squadrons of Iraqi helicopters soared over Baghdad at noon, proudly displaying Iraqi flags in what seemed to be a practice run for the upcoming victory parade.

Crime: On December 9, 1981, a Police officer Daniel Faulkner was found dead with a well-known activist and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, found badly hurt and lying nearby in Philadelphia. Abu-Jamal, who had lost his job at National Public Radio for being outspoken, was driving a taxi around 4 AM when he saw his brother arguing with Faulkner on the street. He tried to help, which led to a gunfight with Faulkner. In 1982, Abu-Jamal was found guilty of killing Faulkner. However, because the details of the incident are unclear and there are concerns about the fairness of the trial, many people around the world believe Abu-Jamal should be released and given justice.

War: On December 9, 1971, during the 138th session of talks, for the first time since the Paris peace talks began in May 1968, both sides refused to set another meeting date. It was reported that the U.S. delegate William Porter angered communist negotiators by requesting a postponement until December 30, seeking a “more constructive approach” from Hanoi and the Viet Cong. The U.S. was frustrated with North Vietnam's repeated demand for South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu's resignation as a discussion prerequisite. It took several months and Nixon’s “Christmas Bombing“ of Hanoi and Haiphong to resume and conclude the peace process.

Crime: On December 9, 2003, the United Nations Convention against Corruption was unveiled for signatures in Mérida, Mexico. This groundbreaking convention provided an incredible framework for nations to unite and tackle the colossal challenge of corruption, a notorious barrier to sustainable development. The audacity of former Zaire President Mobutu Sese Seko, accused of siphoning off a staggering US$ 5 billion from his country's coffers, and the late Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha, allegedly taking US$ 2 billion from the National Bank, plus hiding away another US$ 2-3 billion in bribes were discussed as examples. These jaw-dropping examples were highlighted to rally member states into action against the scourge of corruption.
